As part of the Trust’s ongoing mahi towards our overall key programmes we are offering a special nursery programme. With the support of local landowners at Ocean Beach who have given us access to their property, we have established a native plant nursery specifically to enhance future plantings at the reserve. School groups have the opportunity to have hands-on experiences such as sourcing seed for future plants, sowing the seed, pricking out the subsequent seedlings into root trainers and ultimately, planting those precious seedlings. As part of these experiences, students will have the opportunity to carry out general duties around the nursery such as cleaning out the root trainers, weeding newly planted seedlings etc.
A further initiative from our rangers has been to establish a trap line at the nursery site where students can experience first-hand what a predator trap line looks like and how it functions. They will be able to see the mayo dispenser, the cameras used to monitor wildlife, the newly-established “hotel-like” accommodation for weta and so much more. Check out the following link to see for yourself.
