At Bream Head Te Whara Conservation Trust, every trap checked, every pest plant removed, every tree planted, and every volunteer hour contributes to a thriving future for Te Whara. We are proving what is possible when a community comes together for conservation.

From improving fledging success for the grey-faced petrel/ōi through strengthened predator protection, to establishing a community based native plant nursery to support local eco-sourced revegetation, our impact continues to grow year after year. Through determined fundraising efforts, we are fortunate to employ full-time and part-time rangers, who alongside dozens of community volunteers, provide boots-on-the-ground protection for this extraordinary landscape.

Examples of our impact:

  • Our intensified predator control at the grey-faced petrel/ōi burrow nest site has enabled a significant increase in successful chick fledging.

  • Through our installation and maintenance of a boundary of traps along Ocean Beach Road, more predators are being caught before they make their way into the Reserve.

  • We established an on-site nursery to propagate eco-sourced native trees and enable revegetation of agreed areas of the Reserve.

  • Reintroduction and ongoing protection of Toutouwai, North Island Robin.

  • Improved forest health as a result of ongoing pest plant control.

  • Our education programme typically reaches more than 250 students each year.
