This report covers April and May 2025. Key points:
● Over April and May, trap catches increased for rodents — this is expected at this time of year. Fluctuation in rat and mice numbers is dependent on a range of factors.
● A big focus for rangers has been on pest plant control and keeping on top of rodent uptake on toxin lines.
● Over May, the rangers (alongside many volunteers)took part in the annual kiwi listening.
● Myrtle rust has been detected in a small number of pōhutukawa and mānuka seedlings in the nursery — DOC was notified and has provided advice.
● At the end of May, the intensive monitoring period commenced at the grey-faced petrel/ōi burrow sites.
